Awards

  • The Evans Police Department was awarded $5,000 to participate in the statewide “BUCKLE UP NEW YORK!” campaign from the New York State Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee.
  • The Evans Police Department was awarded $6,500 to fund the Speed Enforcement Unit under New York State Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee. $2,000 of the award is for the purchase of equipment, $4,500 is for increased enforcement efforts.

Detective Bureau

  • The Detective Bureau investigated four residential burglaries in October. One burglary investigation resulted in the arrest of a 26-year-old male who was on parole for burglary. Members of the New York State Park Police Woodlawn Substation assisted in this investigation. The burglary suspect is presently being held in the Erie County Holding Center. His parole is also in question at this time.

    The other three burglaries are still being actively investigated. Forensic evidence which detectives believe may develop a suspect is being examined at this time in connection with one of the Derby area burglaries.
  • The Detective Bureau is investigating a grand larceny case that occurred at Tops Market. A Lakeview woman reported that her wallet was taken from her purse while she was shopping in the store. The wallet was recovered in a ditch alongside of Route 5 in Hamburg with the cash, credit cards and identification missing. Detectives have a good description of a male and female who are suspected in this incident and also are suspected of similar incidents reported in the town of Hamburg.

The Town of Evans Police Detective Bureau reminds women when they are shopping to keep their purses, wallets, etc, in a secure place at all times., over the head under the shoulder. Never leave your purse unguarded in a shopping cart or anywhere in the store. Unfortunately these type of incidents as described above occur more frequently at this time of the year. Be on you guard at all times.

Detective Bureau

  • The Detective Bureau investigated 5 residential burglaries in September. In two of the cases, DNA evidence that Detectives collected at these burglary scenes has been submitted to the Central Police Services lab for examination and possible identification of a suspect.
  • Four grand larceny cases were investigated in September 2002. Two of these cases resulted in the arrest of the offenders. In one of the cases, a 24 year old female was charged with Grand Larceny 3rd degree for allegedly stealing over $4,000.00 from her employer over a period of 4 months.
  • On September 21, 2002, a 17 year old male was charged with felony criminal mischief for damaging a vehicle that was parked in the NYS Thruway employee lot. Detectives accused the subject of smashing the windshield, passenger door winder, side window and sunroof of a 1999 Saturn.
  • Two endangering the welfare of a child cases were investigated. One investigation resulted in the arrest of a 31 year old Buffalo man for endangering the welfare of a 14 year old female. The other case is still being investigated.

The Town of Evans Police Department sadly mourns the tragic loss of Police Officer Terry J. Addison who died suddenly on August 14, 2002 as a result of a motor vehicle accident. Terry was 32 years old.

Detective Bureau

  • In August 2002 the Town of Evans Police Detective Bureau investigated numerous car larcenies that occurred in 2 specific areas in the Town. This investigation led to the arrests of 2 juvenile male subjects and 1 16 year-old subject. It was discovered during the course of this investigation that businesses on Routes 5 and 20 in Irving, Chautauqua County, were also victimized by the same subjects. According to Detective Ernest Masullo, $3,000.00 worth of property was recovered. The subjects’ mode of transportation was bicycles, stolen property was being carried in backpacks.
  • The Detective Bureau is also investigating 6 residential house burglaries that occurred in late July and during the month of August in the Point Breeze area. To this date 1 juvenile has been charged with 2 counts of burglary in connection with these incidents. The 4 additional burglaries are still being actively investigated.
  • Two cases of construction fraud were investigated. In one case an Evans resident gave a contractor $15,000.00. No work was ever performed. After a police investigation, the money was refunded with no arrest made at the time. In another case of fraud, a plumber from Buffalo was given $1,900.00 as a deposit. No work was ever started. After an investigation, the Buffalo man was charged with grand larceny by false promise. A warrant has been issued for this subject and he is being sought at this time.

Detective Bureau

At approximately 5:45 a.m. on July 26th, 2002, the Evans Police received a call from a resident that a teenage male had fallen off the cliff at Lake Shore and Peppertree in Derby. Highland, Lakeview and North Evans Fire companies responded to the rescue, as well as a boat from Lake Erie Rescue. Wilhelm Emich, a 14-year-old resident of Derby, was rescued by boat and transported by Mercy Flight from Sturgeon Point Marina to Children’s Hospital where the subject was in serious but stable condition. The subject was camping out with a friend near the cliffs and it is believed that the fall occurred between 6 and 6:30 a.m. The subject’s bicycle was recovered from the top edge of the cliff.

Detective Bureau

  • The Detective Bureau investigated a two-vehicle collision at Route 5 and Delamater Road on the morning of June 26th. An 84-year-old male Derby resident was killed as a result of this collision.
  • On June 26th the Detective Bureau was called to a serious physical injury auto accident involving a motorcycle and a tractor trailer on Route 20 between Cain and Brant-Angola Roads. A 44-year-old male from Angola was seriously injured. The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
  • Six residential home burglaries and one business burglary were investigated by the Detective Bureau in June. One of the home burglaries was ruled a hoax and closed, the others are still being actively investigated.
  • Two major sex crimes were investigated by the Detective Bureau in June. A sodomy first degree and sexual abuse first degree involving a 3-year-old female is still being actively investigated. This incident allegedly occurred in April 2001. Child Protection Services and the Child Advocacy Center are assisting in this investigation. A suspect has been identified and has since moved from New York State.
  • A sexual misconduct case was investigated. After an investigation that also involved the Erie County District Attorney’s Office, the case was administratively closed.
  • Twenty-three people were arrested, mostly for violations of the New York State Penal Law, Alcohol Beverage Control Law and Vehicle and Traffic Law. Three people were arrested for DWI.

Detective Bureau

  • The Detective Bureau investigated a false bomb incident when a possible bomb was discovered by a mail carrier dropped into a U.S. Postal box along Old Lake Shore Road and Lakeside Drive. Evans Detectives worked with the Postal Inspector and an arrest was made in the case.
  • Two violent assaults resulting in serious injuries were investigated, one occurring outside of Mickey Rats Beach Club and the other on Sturgeon Point Road. The victim of the incident at Mickey Rats was hospitalized in serious condition. The second incident involved 7 youths ages 18 and under, 3 from the Town of Evans and 4 from Hamburg. Arrests are pending in both cases.
  • Eight illegal aliens were apprehended at Sturgeon Point Marina. The subjects were transported by boat from Canada and dropped off at Sturgeon Point Marina where they were apprehended by members of the Evans Police Department, U.S. Border Patrol and the U.S. Coast Guard. The subjects were taken to a Federal holding center in Batavia. Ontario and U.S. Customs made an arrest in the case in Canada.Two sex abuse cases involving children under the age of 14 were investigated by the Detective Bureau in May. One case is still under investigation.
  • Thirty-five people were arrested, mostly for violations of the New York State Penal Law, Alcohol Beverage Control Law and Vehicle and Traffic Law. Five people were arrested for DWI.
