Dispatch

Evans Police Dispatchers took 1,983 complaints for the month of August 1998.

Patrol Division

The Evans Police Patrol Division handled complaints including:

• Thirty-four prisoners were held in the Town of Evans Police Lockup in August 1998.
• One-hundred and forty-two Police reports were filed and 26 accidents were reported to the State of New York as reportable accidents under the Vehicle and Traffic Law.
• Evans Police Officers issued 732 simplified traffic informations in August of 1998 including:

Detective Bureau

The Detective Bureau investigated 102 incidents including:

• Forty-four people were arrested, mostly for violations of the New York State Penal Law, including 2 Felonies, 40 Misdemeanors and 44 Violations for a total of 85 charges. Eleven of the 44 people were arrested for DWI.The Detective Bureau reports an increase of check and credit card related larcenies. Crimes of this nature usually allow a person ample time to steal money before an actual larceny is even reported to law enforcement officials.
• During August of this year, the Detective Bureau received a report of a stolen insurance company check that was cashed at Evans National Bank and the perpetrator received over $2,800. The crime was never reported until a month later and was discovered when the victim had inquired as to why he never received his payment for an insurance claim filed with his homeowners insurance. Bank and insurance company records did show that a check had been sent and cashed. A Detective Bureau follow-up investigation located two persons who were involved in the check larceny and who did cash the check. The outcome of their investigation will result in the arrest of two Angola people and felony charges are going to be filed with Evans Court. The two subjects to be charged did admit to their involvement in the crime.

Dispatch

Evans Police Dispatchers took 2,067 complaints for the month of July 1998.

Patrol Division

The Evans Police Patrol Division handled complaints including:

• The Police Department has procured a 1995 Ford Bronco which was declared surplus equipment from the Highway Department. The Bronco replaces a 1986 Dodge Suburban and has been painted and decals were applied to match the rest of the fleet of police vehicles.
• Twenty-one prisoners were held in the Town of Evans Police Lockup in July 1998.
• One-hundred and twenty-three Police reports were filed and 28 accidents were reported to the State of New York as reportable accidents under the Vehicle and Traffic Law.
• Evans Police Officers issued 427 simplified traffic informations in July of 1998 including:

Detective Bureau

• The Detective Bureau investigated 116 incidents including:

• Fifty-six people were arrested, mostly for violations of the New York State Penal Law, including 6 Felonies, 38 Misdemeanors and 58 Violations for a total of 102 charges. Nine of the 56 people were arrested for DWI.
• The Detective Bureau investigated several sexual assault cases during the month of July. These crimes included one Rape, one Sodomy First Degree and two Sexual Abuse First Degree incidents. All of the cases were separate incidents, the victims ranged in age from 4 to 37 years of age. Investigations in all of these incidents were cleared by arrest.

• Sixteen appearance tickets were issued from the Dog Control Office.

Evans Police Dispatchers took 1,753 complaints for the month of June 1998.

Patrol Division

The Evans Police Patrol Division handled complaints including:

• In a continuing effort to curb the sale of alcohol to minors, the Evans Police conducted an underage decoy operation during the weekend of June 5, 1998. A combination of eleven convenient stores and bars were checked for compliance. As a result of the detail, two businesses and their owners were referred to the New York State Liquor Authority for further action.
• Twelve prisoners were held in the Town of Evans Police Lockup in June 1998.
• One-hundred and three Police reports were filed and 16 accidents were reported to the State of New York as reportable accidents under the Vehicle and Traffic Law.
• Evans Police Officers issued 457 simplified traffic information in June of 1998 including:

Officer of the Month

Officer William Sills is Officer of the Month for his actions while on duty on June 23, 1998. At approximately 2:00am Officer Sills stopped a suspicious looking pickup truck that was unfamiliar in the area. Upon further investigation, Officer Sills discovered 22 12-packs of beer, 5 cases of beer and 7 transmissions in the bed of the truck. The items were taken from a local auto repair shop. Three subjects were arrested and charged with Petit Larceny and Criminal Possession of Stolen Property. Two of the subjects have extensive local police records as well as out of state records, one subject is presently on federal parole for drug trafficking from Florida to Buffalo.

• The Detective Bureau investigated 82 incidents including:

• Thirty-four people were arrested, mostly for violations of the New York State Penal Law, including 19 Felonies, 31 Misdemeanors, and 35 Violations for a total of 76 charges. Eleven of the 34 people arrested were for DWI.

Dog Control

• Eleven appearance tickets were issued from the Dog Control Office.

Officer of the Month

Lt. Detective Samuel DeJohn – was selected Officer of the Month for outstanding investigative efforts in securing the arrest of a 15 year old for the felony burglary 1st degree of a home on Johnson St. when the victim returned home to find the subject in her house.

Detective Bureau

• The Detective Bureau investigated 82 incidents including:

• Thirty-four people were arrested, mostly for violations of the New York State Penal Law, including 19 Felonies, 31 Misdemeanors, and 35 Violations for a total of 76 charges. Eleven of the 34 people arrested were for DWI.
• 15-Year-Old Charged As An Adult
  
  A 15-year-old Evans youth was arrested and charged as an adult following a daytime burglary on Tuesday, May 12th. He was accused of ransacking a neighbor’s home while armed with a baseball bat and some duct tape when the resident returned home and surprised him.The youth was wearing a pillow case over his head with eye and mouth holes when he broke into a house at 910 Johnson St. at approximately 1 p.m.While Lt. Detective DeJohn and Detective Eppolito were investigating the incident, a 15-year-old neighborhood youth went to the house to ask whether the victim was all right. Detective DeJohn, after questioning him and determining that his shoe impressions matched that at the scene, arrested the boy on a first-degree burglary charge.The youth was sent to the East Ferry Street Youth Detention Center in Buffalo.

Patrol Division

• The Town of Evans Police Department handled complaints including:

• Twenty-two prisoners were held in the Town of Evans Police Lockup in April 1998.
• One-hundred and nine Police reports were filed and 16 accidents were reported to the State of New York as reportable accidents under the Vehicle and Traffic Law.

Officer of the Month

Officer Thomas George – was selected Officer of the Month for his outstanding efforts in leading the department in total number of DWI arrests in 1998 and number of summons written in April 1998. Officer George in the recipient of the 1997 STOP-DWI Award.

Detective Bureau

• The Detective Bureau investigated 104 incidents including:

• Twenty-two people were arrested, mostly for violations of the New York State Penal Law, including 16 Felonies, 32 Misdemeanors, and 62 Violations for a total of 110 charges. Thirteen of the 32 people arrested were for DWI.
• Unlawfully Dealing with a Child An Evans man was arrested for unlawfully dealing with a child in the first degree following a week-long investigation of an incident in which the subject purchased alcohol for a group of minors. A 15-year old female became violently ill and was transported by ambulance to Our Lady of Victory Hospital for treatment of alcohol poisoning after consuming alcohol purchased by Allen Hein. Hein, 21, reportedly purchased a bottle of 100 proof vodka at a Derby liquor store at the request of the minors. The alcohol was consumed at a nearby residence. Hein could face up to one year in prison if convicted on the charge against him.
