Effective July 1, 2009, the SPCA facility located on Gowans Road in the Town of Evans is closed. The Town has made arrangements with other public and private facilities in the area to accept stray and/or wounded pets.

Monthly Report – May 2009

Training

Lt. Don Hepkins and Patrolman Mike Kauzala attended a four day SLR15 Rifle School held at Cheektowaga Police Department. The school trained the officers on different techniques on using the AR15 rifle. These officers will now train other police officers.

Detective Doug Czora and Patrolman Ralph Maslach attended a three day Law Enforcement Symposium on Street Gangs and Gang Related Crimes.

Patrolmen Joe LaRosa and Brian Kauzala attended Breath Analysis Operator School. Both officers are now certified in the operation of the Data-Master. This instrument is used to test drivers blood alcohol content.

Patrolmen Bruce Green Jr. and Ralph Maslach attended Interview and Body Language Training.

Equipment

The Evans Police Department has retrofitted their portable radar sign to use solar power. Doing so will allow the unit to stay at locations longer without charging the batteries.

Officer Jeff Mayer was the Evans Police Department recipient of the Erie County Stop DWI Award at the Eighteenth Annual Erie County STOP-DWI Awards Breakfast on April 24, 2009.

Equipment Upgrade

Evans police vehicles are now equipped with bars on the back windows for additional protection to the passenger, driver, and vehicle.

Personnel

  • Vincent Rovnak was appointed as part-time Public Safety Dispatcher at the February 18, 2009 Town Board Meeting.
  • Newly trained members of the accident investigation unit (AIU) include Ptl. Brian KauzalaPtl. Tom Crupe and Lt. Mike Masullo, who was appointed Commander in Charge of the AIU.
  • Ptl. Mike Kauzala attended Glock Armorer’s School in February and has been assigned to assist Lt. Don Hepkins with training and maintenance of the Evans Police Department arsenal.
  • Dispatcher Patrick Garrigan has been assigned as lead Training Public Safety Dispatcher.
  • Patrolman Bruce Green Jr. has been assigned the management and oversight of safety equipment, oxygen, inhalators and automated external defibrillators, to be assisted by DCO Michael Franey and Dispatcher Amy Hamm.
  • Patrolwoman Sherry Miller has been assigned the management and oversight of all radar units, maintenance records, radar logs and radar accessories, to be assisted by Patrolman Matt Stonitsch.

  • Patrolman Ralph Maslach and Dispatcher Lynette Braeuner received a letter of Recognition on January 23, 2009 for their efforts that lead to the successful investigation and drug arrest of three subjects.
  • Detective Doug Czora and Detective Brad DiMartino received a letter of Commendation on January 23, 2009 for outstanding performance in the arrest of three subjects for criminal possession of drugs, unlawful manufacturing of methamphetamine along with numerous other charges.
  • Detective Brad DiMartino received a letter of Commendation on January 22, 2009 for the successful investigation and arrest of an individual for a burglary.
